  1. The Lord focuses His judgement for His people on the righteousness of one man 1 Chronicles 21:1-7
  2. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God 1 Chronicles 21:8-14
  3. David asks the Lord for the sword to fall on him instead of the people 1 Chronicles 21:15-17
  4. The Lord suspends the sword in the air until an altar and sacrifice can be placed under it at great cost to the messiah 1 Chronicles 21:18-22:1

Family Discussion Questions:

  1. What caused the Lord to send Satan to set up this action of David? (2 Samuel 24:1)
  2. How did David function as a covenant head in his sin (or like a kinsman redeemer)?
  3. Why was this better for Israel if the punishment focused on the sin of the one man?
  4. In what way was it better to fall into the hands of God versus other enemies?
  5. In what way was it worse?How are you tempted to fear other things more than God (men, loneliness, rejection, poverty, pain, shame, unfulfilled desires)?
  6. Has the mercy of God caused you to imagine (or live like) He is not a just God who hates and punishes sin?
  7. How does David fulfill his role as messiah here differently than how the Lord Jesus did at the cross? What is similar?
  8. If the cost to satisfy the justice of God was an indication of the love for God and for His people, compare the love of David for God’s people to Jesus’ love for God’s people.
