John 18:1 - 11

The Lamb is a Lion

Jesus takes steps toward the Cross, into the Garden of Gethsemane to be betrayed and arrested.  We hear from the eyewitnesses that He was no victim, and His life not taken from Him.  He was not overpowered nor did He go against His will.  This was not happening because of the strength of His captors - this showed His strength.  The Lord of the Universe willingly gave Himself because this was the eternal plan from before the creation of the Universe.

He Chooses to Drink the Cup that We Deserve

Using the imagery of cups filled with wine, He shows that He was determined to step in front of what was coming for sinners.  He would "drink the cup" of judgement that we deserve so that we could have eternal life "drinking the cup" of joy that He's always had and always deserved.

God Powerfully and Lovingly Oversees our Suffering For the Same Purpose

God isn't powerless in the face of suffering and evil.  Nothing happens for no reason.  For His children, He sovereignly guides all things to work together for the purpose of His children experiencing the joy that Christ laid His life down to purchase for them.
