John 11:17-44

We get to watch as the Author of Life comes face to face with the sting of our sin against Him - death. Jesus was filled with grief because of the death of His friend, and fiery anger against sin which ultimately brought about Lazarus' death and the death of every person. In this passion, and in obedience to God the Father, Jesus performs His greatest sign - raising a man who had been dead for four days in front of many witnesses. This sign was unmistakable and was so much greater than someone claiming they went to heaven - even Jesus' most passionate opponents did not contest it. This sign confirmed that as Jesus' voice called Lazarus from death to life, the souls of all who hear the promise of the Gospel (which is the voice of Jesus) and believe are raised to new life in Him. The bodies of those whose souls have been made alive by faith in Christ be raised as His voice is heard when He returns on the last day. Jesus is the resurrection and the life.
